still point, world turning

The street where I live

The street where I live has become … a giant sewing box!

The bi-annual Ruas Floridas / Flowered Streets festival is about to begin. I have yet to find someone who can tell me how this festival of paper came about and how long it has been going on for, but the whole town transforms into a bright patchwork of colour, shimmering in the (warm) breeze. All the decorations are made of paper and by hand. Thousands of hours of work go into this. I’m not sure how it all comes about but the community effort is quite extraordinary to behold.

This is my street under ordinary circumstances ….

And this is my street as it is now: a caixa de costura / sewing box

Gosh how amazing….my dad would have loved this ! Never thought of paper cut outs as an art form but how beautiful and sculptural that looks…a 3D paper fest!
Good thing no rains or south easter predicted!

He would indeed have loved this! Everything, but everything, is made from paper by the local community. Their attention to detail is astonishing.

I adore what you have shared…. what an absolutely, delightfully orgasmic paper kaleidoscope. I am unbelievably jealous and will DEFINITELY come and visit next year when this is on. It is like I stepped into one of my childhood dreams where I fantasized about paper all the time, only better … my word it is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
